Pneuma (pronounced noo-ma, it means spirit in greek) is a 3 year old Doberman and we got her in September 2010, we got her as a foster from Many Tears. I have never seen a dog in real life in such a terrible state. She had such bad mange that her skin was one huge, itchy scab. On the car journey home from collecting her I sat in the back of the car with her, I have never seen a dog look so sad before. She sat with her head hung low and looked miserable.
Her story was that her original owners had taken her to the vet to be put down because of her skin, luckily the vet got in contact with Many Tears and they collected her. She had also been in a previous foster home a few weeks before we took her on.
When we brought her home that's when we could fully inspect her skin, it was flaky, dry and had big spots on. It was sore to say the least! Her eyes were gungy and so sore. She wasn't in a good place!
These are photos that I took of her on the first day. She had no Doberman markings at all. Her feet were also scabby and would bleed because she had scabs between her pads.
She came with a big box of lotions and potions and it was daunting going it through it all, she had to eye drops, ear drops, special oils, special creams, drops in her food, pills in the morning, pills at night, the list was endless!
We decided to do away with most of these medicines. We bathed her in the Malasab shampoo every other day and she had various drops in her food. We used a cream from Lush that is for eczema and that helped to soothe her skin. We also changed her diet and put her onto a RAW diet (which she loved!!) Slowly she began to grow fur and she came on leaps and bounds. It was great to see the change in her.
She is such a loyal dog and got very attached to us and us her. After the first week we decided to keep her, we couldn't bare to see her leave.
All that was 8 months ago now and here is a photo of Pneuma today!
Her hair has grown back and she is a healthy happy dog! She is very loyal and loves a fuss. She is just like a big puppy, always on at the others to play. We did have a few problems with her and the smaller dogs at first, she would be very unpredictable with them but we have stuck with her and she seems to have turned a corner. She is very sociable on walks and it's only now that she's learning to play with big dogs when we're out on a walk. She's such a fantastic dog and we're lucky to have her!
